Living Planet Index

The Index

To be able to protect nature, we need to understand environmental change over time and in different places. The Living Planet Index (LPI), currently produced by ZSL (Zoological Society of London), was developed in 1997 as an indicator to measure one aspect of the changing state of the world’s biological diversity. The Living Planet Index (LPI) measures the average change in the size of wild populations of vertebrate species over time.
